Where to Stay

In all honestly, if you only have one day in Amsterdam, I’d suggest you to stay in Amsterdam Centrum. The reason? You don’t want to waste time commuting from one place to the other. All the attractions (on my list anyway) are within walking distance to the Central station.

Looking for first hand recommendations? We stayed at The Hendricks Hotel and absolutely loved our stay! Hendricks is a very small cosy boutiquey hotel near the central station and all their rooms are themed differently (our room was nautical inspired). It’s worth checking it out.

Dutch Pancakes

What is the first thing you think about when you hear about Amsterdam? (No its not the Red light district – although that might be the second thing) … Dutch pancakes!!

We landed in Amsterdam just after noon so we kind of tweaked this as per our schedule.

This was a must have on my list. As soon as we landed we checked in to our hotel and I practically forced Shams out cuz I couldn’t wait to cross off everything I had on my list.

There are tonnes of pancake places in Amsterdam Centrum. We had ours at Pancakes and Waffles

Dam Square

With our full and satisfied tummies we then headed towards Dam square which was also a short walk away. On our way to Dam square we walked by a shopping street so in case you are planning to shop, now is the time.

There is lots going on at Dam square around the clock. If you have kids, take advantage of feeding the pigeons.  There’s also a few quaint coffee shops there so feel free to grab a chair and enjoy local artists performing their best.

Canal Cruise

Frankly, I like to over plan and over think before I travel. I’m one of those people who hate to waste time and would try to squeeze as much out of a place as I can.
I read a ton of blogs on the best way to see Amsterdam in 1 day and I have to agree the best way to see all of Amsterdam is through a Canal Cruise.
Living in North America, we don’t get to do this a lot so we quickly hopped on to one. We bought a combo pass of Canal Cruise and Museum of Prostitution to save a few bucks (more on that later). The cruise lasted an hour and they had a bar on site. How cool is that?

I’ve really been wanting to try good Turkish food for a while. Sadly Vancouver doesn’t have a lot of good authentic Turkish restaurants. One of my husbands co-workers suggested us to try Turkish food on our trip. So we looked for a one with good reviews and ended up at Levant. Needless to say we now understand what the hype is about.

P.S: We couldnt stop eating their Tzatziki dip

Museum of Prostitution

There’s no way you haven’t heard of the Red light district in Amsterdam. This is a great place if you are looking to enjoy some night life during your trip. As I mentioned earlier we booked a combo ticket along with the Canal cruise.

The Museum of Prostitution is a great place to understand the history and culture of legal prostitution, you quickly realize how skewed and biased you’ve been all your life and start seeing things differently, plus you also get to take a cool picture in the end as a souvenir!

Moulin Rouge

We ended our night attending a show at Moulin Rouge, it was a great crowd and we laughed our lungs off. Perfect way to end our Amsterdam 1 day itinerary

Bonus: Rijksmuseum

We were continuing our trip  to other parts of Europe where we had planned to spend more time and visit museums so we skipped this one but if you aren’t planning to visit any other museums its worth visiting at least one museum in Amsterdam.

How to Get Around Amsterdam

With just one day in Amsterdam, the best way to get around is by walking. The city is pretty small and walkable. However, if you plan to stay a little outside city centre, you can also get a 24-transit card. Or, if you are feeling adventurous, you can rent a bike for the day! Amsterdam is the biggest biking capital of the world. Hope you enjoyed this One day in Amsterdam itinerary . Have a great trip!
